The Global Initiative Programme at SJIIES Elementary School instills in students a compassionate understanding of children in other parts of the world who do not have access to the same educational opportunities. The school has supported two organizations since its inception - 'The Child is Innocent' in Uganda and 'Unity in Diversity Foundation' in Indonesia.
ABOUT THE ORGANISATIONS
THE CHILD IS INNOCENT
The Child is Innocent believes an effective way of transforming a community is through education. This organization sponsors children affected by war in Northern Uganda, mostly orphans or former LRA abductees, to receive a balanced education. The Child is Innocent was founded in 2004 and has supported 104 vulnerable children.
YAYASAN BHINEKA TUNGGAL IKA UNIVERSAL
(Unity in Diversity Universal Foundation)
“Unity in Diversity” is a Foundation working to provide a better life for deprived peoples in remote villages. The Foundation empowers the people to take ownership for the progress and development of their own village and believes the first step towards empowerment is a good education.
Millions of children in remote villages all over Indonesia are deprived of a basic education. With the support of the people in the village, the foundation has established Education Centres in 13 remote villages and 2 towns for about 1000 children from the ages of 4 - 10 years and 250 junior youth from the ages of 11 - 15 years. The teachers in these Education Centers, who are also youth from the villages, have been trained in a special teacher training program run by the Foundation. In this program the youth are empowered to become not only teachers of young children and mentors of Junior Youth, but also change agents of society.
